What tourists want: Is there a market demand for green hotels?

One of the emerging trends among international travellers is the growing environmental consciousness. The future tourists will tend to be more educated and with higher environmental awareness. The process has already begun.

  • A national survey in the United States revealed that 78% of American adults considered themselves environmentally conscious and had adopted sound environmental practices related to water and energy conservation and waste disposal at home, and 54% would be more likely to choose hotels or resorts they knew practiced environmental responsibility. Thirteen percent would definitely be willing to pay higher rates or fares - although 56% said they might (Travel Industry Association and Y Partnership, 2007).

  • A more recent study revealed that 44% of U.S. travellers consider the environmental impact to be important to them when planning travel. Survey also found that 56% are skeptical of what companies are telling them about green practices and only 8% think it is easy to find green travel options. Nearly one third of U.S. travelers would pay premiums, but these savvy consumers are looking for practices that go above and beyond cursory measures. (PhoCusWright, 2009)

  • According to National Geographic, there are 55 million ‘geo-travellers’ in United States seeking environmentally and socially responsible tourism services and products.

The total number of U.S. visitors in Ireland was almost 1.1 million in 2007

  • Another survey by TripAdvisor (2007) of 1000 travellers worldwide reported that for 38% of respondents environmentally-friendly tourism is a consideration when travelling. The same number had stayed at an environmentally-friendly hotel, 37% are willing to pay a premium of at least 5-10%, and 9% specifically seek out such hotels.

  • In the UK, a survey commissioned by the Association of British Travel Agents (2002) found that, for 87% of British respondents, it was very important that their holiday did not damage the environment and that it benefited the people of the destination through jobs and business opportunities (76%)
The number of British visitors in Ireland reached 3.77 million in 2007
  • In Europe, the Swiss tourists are the most concerned with 95% considering respect for local culture to be highly important when choosing a holiday and with a majority also interested in local culture and locally-produced food (Swiss Travel Writers and Journalism Club, 2005).
  • A recent study of over 6,000 people in Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and North America found that the willingness to pay more to offset the environmental costs of their holiday ranged from as low as 2% for Germans, to as high as 12% for Spaniards. Also 32% of Italians surveyed expressed willingness to switch to greener plans leading all the countries (TNS Travel & Tourism, 2007).
The number of tourist form Mainland Europe in Ireland was 2.57 million in 2007, of which 257,000 were Italian.
