Green Hospitality Award Members increased by 20%

Green Hospitality Award (GHA) members increased by 20% year to date as businesses in the Hospitality sector realise the benefits of implementing an effective Environmental Management programme. The surge is expected to continue following a series of free workshops which took place nationwide throughout June.

The GHA provides a step-by-step approach to environmental management with awards given at Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum levels. The GHA is now recognised as the standard for environmental management within the hospitality sector in Ireland and is fully supported by Failte Ireland and the Irish Hotels Federation.

In 2009 hotels numbers have grown significantly with 33 new properties having joined in the first six month of this year. These include hotels throughout Ireland and include hotels from groups such as Ritz Carlton, Bewleys and Hilton to owner managed properties such as Claregalway Hotel and County Arms Hotel, Offaly (see full list below).

A total of 120 people, representing 80 properties attended the recent GHA workshops and listened to an interesting and varied line-up of speakers, including testimonials from local members who have already successfully implemented the programme to representatives from companies who provide water, waste and energy saving solutions to the Industry.

Mr Maurice Bergin, Director of the Green Hospitality Award, also addressed the workshops and the underlying message from him was, “Implementing the Green Hospitality Award will enable properties to reduce consumption and utility bills, capture 'Green Business' and achieve targets in their own Corporate Social Responsibility policies, as well as maintaining compliance with environmental legislation”.

The Green Hospitality Award programme, currently has 150 members, and last year a total of 81 awards were presented nationally to businesses that are actively partaking in the programme. Those that are involved have already seen the positive results of their efforts. Achievements include reducing waste going to landfill by 50%, reducing water consumption by 50% and reducing energy consumption by up to 30% all of which impact positively on the bottom line as well as on the environment.

In 2008 the Environmental Protection Agency commenced funding the Green Hospitality Award, through its Green Business Initiative. This funding is planned to be available until 2011 and is designed to assist the award in spreading throughout the hotel and hospitality sector.
