2010 Energy Show Review

The 5th Energy Show, run by SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland – the old SEI), was held in the RDs on the 14/15th April. In the middle of very tough economic times it was remarkable to see a trade exhibition such as this bigger and more professional than ever – suggesting that many entrepreneurs can see that there is a strong future in energy efficiency, management and alternatives.

Every facet of energy management was present as well as a large display of Electric & Hybrid vehicles ranging from a simple bike with electric motor attached up to commercial lorries, and all in between.

The show was opened by Eamonn Ryan TD, Minister for Communications, Energy & Natural Resources and he identified the market in Ireland for environmental goods and services grew to €2.8 billion in 2008 and is €700 billion in size worldwide – GHA members will know that many companies are looking for “Green” hotels and meetings as part of their environmental programmes.

Over 200 exhibitors presented a wide range of opportunities, products, services and advice. What stood out for me?

Lighting – at least 5 companies were demonstrating the most modern dimmable LED bulbs which will fit directly into existing light fittings and dimming circuits – I only saw 1 company at Hotelympia offering this so the market is moving fast. Fluorescent technology is not totally dead yet with a number of suppliers offering conversions from T8 fluorescent tubes to T5 with up to 50% savings.

Outdoor lighting must not be forgotten – remember cheap rate electricity only applies from 11.00pm to 7.00 am – every property can have large levels of wattage on outside these hours paying premium rates so energy efficiency outdoors is necessary. Options included LED floods and streetlights to high efficiency fluorescent.

Metering – a large increase in companies offering meters themselves and then monitoring services – on the basis that if you don’t read and use the data there is no point. Most suppliers of the software are focusing on wireless or internet readings which can deliver up-to-the minute information to your laptop, PC or mobile telephone.

GHA members who have metered and sub-metered will know that value such information can deliver and international studies show that metering alone can result in up to 10-20% reductions in energy consumption – if your staff know they are being monitored they will take action to reduce consumption.

Insulation – the most important element in energy management, says many experts. And often the cheapest option if roof spaces are lacking insulation. Lagging jackets for valves and flanges were on display – these are areas often forgotten in plant rooms and some cheap insulation can deliver good consumption reductions.

All the usual suspects were present – Combined Heat & Power (CHP), solar for hot water, heat pumps, biomass boilers, sensors and controllers.

The area that stood out here was the whole element of control – who is in control of the heating/cooling of your property, is it being managed to your budgetary requirements or is it ad-hoc

Overall I was very impressed at this Energy Show and I would recommend it for any GHA member as it can spark an idea that can be carried back to your own property – it should be a must visit exhibition on your facility management calendar.
