Earth Hour 27 March 2010 - how your hotel can support it

At 8.30pm on 27 March 2010, millions of people in cities across the planet will turn off their lights for one hour – Earth Hour – to show the world that a solution to the threat of global warming is possible through collective action. WWF and Earth Hour supporters around the world want your hotel to be part of this historic moment.

There are many ways hotels can support Earth Hour, from turning out the lights in their buildings/facilities on the night through to encouraging staff and guests to join the Earth Hour initiative. Show current and future guests you’re supporting Earth Hour and contributing to a global climate resolution!

There are many ways hotels can support Earth Hour, from turning out the lights outside/inside their buildings on the night through to encouraging guests to join the Earth Hour initiative. The following information outlines the various levels of commitment to Earth Hour, be it big or small.

1) Turn off non-essential lights at 8:30pm Saturday 27 March 2010

Turn off the exterior lights and neon signs of your hotel for one hour at 8.30pm on Saturday 27 March 2010. Join other hotels worldwide in this global show of action.

Internally, switch to minimal lighting (in accordance with your occupational health and safety policy) your corridors, lobbies, restaurants, bars, shops and back of house. As an idea, many hotels took this opportunity to hold candlelight events which were very well received by their guests. Do this or other creative events which promote the initiative!

2) Register your hotel on www.earthhour.org

Show your support by signing up your hotel at www.earthhour.org and join other hotels, businesses, local councils, governments and non-government organisations in this simple but significant initiative. Rest assured - it’s free and we’ll send you regular Earth Hour updates and information.

3) Communicate Earth Hour to guests and tenants

Use new and existing communication channels to provide information about Earth Hour to guests and tenants. Here are some simple ideas you could use:

  • Inform all guests about the night’s historical event (e.g. displaying Earth Hour posters in the lobby/reception) and ask for their voluntary participation to switch off in their rooms at 8:30pm

  • Provide information about Earth Hour to guests, especially on the morning of March 27 2010

  • Organise special activities and promotions in conjunction with Earth Hour in restaurants, bars and stores situated within your hotel. Some creative ideas include holding candlelight dinners and cocktails or having special Earth Hour menu.

  • Include a link to the Earth Hour website on your homepage or host an Earth Hour banner.

  • Include special offers for Earth Hour in newsletters sent out to hotel members and encourage them to tell a friend or to join your hotel in this historic event.

Do ensure that tenants and guests are aware of your involvement. Show them and the public your green initiatives!

To see how you can promote Earth Hour and your hotel’s active participation in this historic worldwide event, please see the promotional materials available on our website at www.earthhour.org which are provided for your use for free.

4) Communicate Earth Hour to your staff

Participating in Earth Hour requires every level of your hotel becoming involved. You could:

  • Communicate Earth Hour to all staff using email, newsletters, posters, intranet, SMS, website, staff associations and committees.

  • Encourage staff, colleagues and their families to take part in Earth Hour on the 27 March 2010 and commit to ongoing low-carbon habits in the workplace and at home.

5) Make change an everyday part of your hotel

If you’ve assessed the emissions of your hotel’s activities you’ll be aware that the simple changes Earth Hour encourages you to make on an ongoing basis are very achievable. These are some of the ways your hotel can start to reduce emissions today as well as reduce costs:

  • Turning off lights after hours in back offices or installing motion-sensor lighting.

  • Installing energy saving lights and energy saving devices (e.g. timers on lighting).

  • Turning off printers, computers, monitors, microwaves and coffee machines at the power points at the end of the day when unused for long periods.

  • Switching your hotel’s electricity to Green Power.

Furthermore, elect Earth Hour Monitors for your workplace to ensure lights are out and appliances are off standby at the end of each day.

6) Show what your hotel is doing for Earth Hour

Earth Hour has many opportunities to showcase what your hotel is doing to support the initiative, from media and PR through to the Earth Hour website and email bulletins. Please let us know so we can show the world your efforts! Contact us to discuss the public relation opportunities for your university: newsdesk@earthhour.org

Earth Hour - Proudly Committed

Thanks for your support!
