Repak launches 'Prevent and Save' website at Packaging Optimisation Forum

Repak, the industry-funded packaging recycling scheme, has announced that over 4395 tonnes of packaging was prevented through its packaging optimisation scheme.

The announcement was made at a Packaging Optimisation Forum in Dublin, which was held as part of the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR), where it was also revealed that 17 of the 40 participating companies also achieved financial saving in excess of €9 million through better management of their packaging systems.

Colm Munnelly, Packaging Technologist, Repak said - “These packaging prevention measures are great news for industry, the environment and consumers. Irish companies are making significant financial savings, less packing is generated and placed on the market and consumers are receiving less packaging on their products.

"As part of our Packaging Optimisation Programme we are also launching a new online facility (www.preventandsave.ie ) to help companies reduce the amount of packaging waste they produce. These measures range from packaging redesign with new formats, to the introduction and use of reusable containers for transport. "We are calling on all industry to participate - not just for the environment, but for the clear financial savings.”

The saving came from a variety of different measures taken by companies including -

  • Green Isle Foods - eliminating 850 tonnes of wood, cardboard and plastic packaging equivalent to 19 million pizza boxes.

  • Evode - preventing 40 tonnes with reusable containers and product redesign.

  • Glenisk Organic Dairy - reducing the amount of plastic packaging used from 33% in 2006 to 12% through changing packaging formats and designs.

  • Cadbury Limited - preventing 730 tonnes - reducing packaging on Easter Eggs and introducing new packaging formats.

  • Symantec - who prevented 345.6 metric tones of paper, plastic and cardboard packaging by switching to electronic downloadable products.

  • Microsoft - who, through changing the design of its Microsoft Mac Office packaging, led to a reduction of 210 tonnes of packaging.

  • McDonald’s - whose packaging prevention programmes removed 176 tonnes of packaging.

Dr Gerry Byrne, Programme Manager EPA, which provides 50% financial support for the Packaging Prevention Programmes through its National Waste Prevention Programme, said - “Packaging waste forms a significant element in waste. We must minimise packaging where possible and continue to recycle as much as we can."
