A Third of Consumers would opt for 'eco-friendly' Hotels

GHA Press Release, December 2009

Green Hospitality Award, (GHA) who provide an environmental management programme for the hospitality industry, welcome the findings of a pan-European survey which demonstrates that Hotel guests are becoming more concerned with hotels' eco-credentials. Almost a third (29%) of respondents would choose a known 'eco-friendly' hotel if it was offered by a popular online booking system. The poll of 5,000 people found that more than half (54%) say sustainable energy sources, such as wind, solar or hydro-electric power, should be used.

Almost half (48%) say hotels should use more efficient electrical appliances, like flat screen energy efficient TVs and nearly two thirds (65%) say all hotels should install low flow toilets designed to save water.

The demand for green credentials is echoed by guests' own behaviour in hotels, according to the study by Samsung Electronics:

  • More than three quarters(76%) are as conscious or more conscious of the impact they have on the environment when staying in hotels compared with their behaviour at home

  • 88% switch off the lights when they leave their hotel room

  • 63% reuse towels more than once

  • 59% still switch electrical equipment off at the base

“We have been working hard to communicate the message that not only does an improved environmental management programme reduce costs for the Hospitality sector, but, as these statistics show, there is a clear demand from the consumer for eco friendly hotels”, said Maurice Bergin, Director, Green Hospitality Award. "Hoteliers can appeal to the 'green' consumer by responding to their expectations; putting in water-saving toilets, using sustainable energy or installing eco-friendly appliances like energy efficient flat screen TVs."

The Green Hospitality Award provides a step-by-step approach to environmental management with awards given at Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum levels and has swiftly become the standard for environmental management within the hotel sector in Ireland.

Those involved in the Green Hospitality Award programme aim to have c.180 members by the end of this year. Existing members have already seen the positive results of their efforts. Achievements include reducing waste going to landfill by 50%, reducing water consumption by 50% and reducing energy consumption by up to 30%, all of which impact positively on the bottom line as well as on the environment. Members have made savings of between €10,000 to €100,000+ per annum – mainly through No or Low cost activities.

In 2008 the Environmental Protection Agency commenced funding the Green Hospitality Award, through its Green Business Initiative. This funding is planned to be available until 2011 and is designed to assist the award in spreading throughout the hotel and hospitality sector.
