Green Hotels Are Set to Gain Commercially

“With Carbon Tax earmarked for the next budget and more stringent Environmental Legislation coming down the tracks, there is no better time for players in the Hospitality Industry to implement Environmental Management Programmes. Not only can they save money in these recessionary times but they will gain commercially”. That was the advice from Maurice Bergin, Director, Green Hospitality Award at the 3rd National Hospitality Environmental Conference “Planning for a Sustainable Future” which was chaired by Senator Dan Boyle, Green Party Chairman.

Good Food Ireland

Backing up this claim Paddy Matthews from Failte Ireland announced the introduction of a ‘Green Filter’ on the Discover Ireland website which will allow visitors to Ireland choose properties that have achieved an environmental certification, such as the Green Hospitality Award. According to a recent Failte Ireland Visitor survey, not only would 52% of visitors to Ireland seek to stay in a hotel that has reduced its environmental impact but 35% would pay more.

Also speaking at the Conference was Charlie Browne, Environmental Manager, IKEA, UK and Ireland. Who said “IKEA has invested €2.2m on renewable and recycling technologies in its new Ballymun store. During the first month of trading the store exceeded its target and recycled 90% of its waste which compares with a commercial national average of 47.5% this represents a saving of approximately €80,000 per annum for the Dublin store”.

Deirdre O’Sullivan, Operational Administration Officer from the Green team for the Aviva Stadium presented on how the new Lansdowne Road stadium has sustainability at the top of its agenda even during the construction phase. “The old Stadium was recycled to reduce the amount of material moved by road both to and from the site, the concrete from the frame of the old stadium was crushed up after demolition to be used on site as site road base, and to fill the site to form the new levels”.

Other guest Speakers included Dr Ken Macken - EPA , Margaret Jeffares - Good Food Ireland, Kristina Allison - SEI and Andrew Henning – Westin Hotels.

Workshop presentations by Caitriona McGroary - Radisson Blu Hotels, Tony Dineen - Bio Power Group, James Hogan - Clean Technology Centre, Syed Rizvi - Fitzpatricks Castle, Dan Deasy - ResourceKraft, Frank Daly - Kinviro and Charles Dwyer - Lowflo.
